Set in 1940s America, The Shawshank Redemption tells the compelling story of banker Andy Dufresne, who is wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, leading to a life sentence at Shawshank State Penitentiary. Inside the prison, Andy quietly devises a meticulous plan for self-liberation, ultimately escaping to reclaim his freedom.

This film delves into profound themes of hope, freedom, friendship, and redemption. As many critics have noted, regardless of one's circumstances, there is a universal resonance in this film's narrative. Now, 30 years after its release in 1994, The Shawshank Redemption remains popular and is celebrated as a must-see film.

Chinese adaptation: New artistic interpretation

The Chinese stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption returns to the original text, presenting the novella in a fresh artistic format. The English version debuted in Dublin back in 2009, and in 2024, the Chinese version was rolled out, giving local audiences the chance to experience the "power of hope" in their own language.

What visual and emotional effects can a classic story create when interpreted in a new way? During the upcoming festival, the Shawshank Redemption stage play will perform at the Guilin Grand Theatre, inviting audiences to explore the answers to this question.
