Guilin and art seem to be a natural blend. Since its inauguration in 2022, the Guilin Festival has held two editions.
The festival has adhered to the requirements of "global perspective, international standards, Chinese style, Guangxi characteristics, and Guilin classics," attracting a diverse range of professional and youthful theatrical works. This has facilitated the engagement of both domestic and foreign artists in the exploration of artistic themes within the context of the region's stunning landscapes.
With a deep historical connection between Guilin and theater dating back 80 years, Guilin has been a cultural hub. The Southwest Drama Exhibition held in Guilin in 1944 pioneered modern Chinese drama, showcasing the patriotic sentiments of theater practitioners. The successful organization of the Guilin Festival continues this theatrical tradition, further weaving the precious bond between Guilin and theatrical arts.
Through innovative use of outdoor venues like the Mountain Theater, Water Theater, and Cave Theater, the festival seamlessly integrates nature into the theater, embodying the philosophical concept of "unity of man and nature, harmonious coexistence." Leveraging Guilin's unique natural landscapes, artists have ignited countless artistic sparks, blending theatrical arts with the natural beauty of the mountains and rivers.
The international and professional acclaim of the Guilin Festival allows both domestic and foreign artists to envision the future of theatrical arts collectively. With its distinctive charm, the festival is transmitting Guilin's landscapes and culture to the world, emerging as a new cultural calling card extended by Guilin to the global stage.
