A lightweight AI glasses, developed with significant input from a Hechi University graduate, has attracted attention at a major China-ASEAN event, showcasing Guangxi's advancements in artificial intelligence innovation and promotes deeper technological exchanges with ASEAN.

The 61-gram device, featuring real-time translation, smart prompting and AI interaction, was highlighted by Guangxi leaders at the 22nd China-ASEAN Expo opening on Sept 17.

It supports 138 languages and achieves 90 percent accuracy in recognizing ASEAN minority languages, making it a useful tool for cross-border communication.

Huang Youzhang, a 2015 graduate of Hechi University's Mechanical Design and Manufacturing program, is the key member behind its research and development. He is now deputy general manager of Maiyue Technology.

Huang's college years laid a crucial foundation for his career. There, he learned IT skills like multimedia equipment operation and programming, going beyond his mechanical major and expanding his tech perspective.

Since joining Maiyue in 2015, Huang has guided the team through difficult research and development challenges. The biggest obstacle was combining multiple functions into the small frame while keeping the glasses lightweight and ensuring long battery life.

After repeated tests, they used lightweight materials and optimized the structure, finally achieving a balance between performance, weight and style.

The AI glasses have gained significant market recognition, with over 1,000 orders in Thailand and increasing domestic demand. Huang attributes their success to his team's varied strengths – bringing together algorithm specialists, demand analysts, and cross-disciplinary talents like himself – and their emphasis on open communication.

Huang's journey from a Hechi University student to a tech research and development leader reflects Guangxi's expanding AI industry, and he aims to bring more local tech innovations to ASEAN and global markets.
