Tian'e county is located in the northeast of Hechi city. Covering an area of 3,196 square kilometers, it is home to 143,155 people.

Twenty ethnic groups including the Han, Yao, Dong, Miao, Mulam and Maonan are resident in the county, with Bala Yao town known for being home to a large Yao population.

Tian'e county's terrain is mostly mountainous. There are 311 mountains with a height of over 1,000 meters, and 1,419-meter Gaolou Mountain has the highest peak in the county.

With a reputation as being the "forest kingdom", the county's forest coverage rate is 82.6 percent. Tian'e has abundant wildlife and is rich in minerals. Longtan Hydropower Station, the second largest hydropower station in China and also a 3A-level scenic spot, is located in the county.

In 2022, Tian'e county's GDP reached 7.6 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), a year-on-year increase of 9.1 percent. The added value of industries above designated size was 3.93 billion, seeing a decrease of 17 percent. The fixed-asset investment decreased by 8.1 percent. The disposable income of urban residents and rural residents was 31,975 yuan and 12,757 yuan, increasing 3.6 percent and 6.7 percent respectively.
