Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county, Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, has started construction on its first biomass power plant with an estimated installed capacity of 175 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

The project, which cost 180 million yuan ($21.62 million), began on July 21. It is financed by Hunan-headquartered Reang Eco-Energy Co.

The meet full capacity, generators at the facility will consume about 320,000 metric tons of biomass fuel, processed from straw and other agricultural wastes.

Once completed the plant is projected to produce the energy equivalent of 100,000 tons of standard coal a year, and create almost 2,000 jobs for local farmers. Straw alone will bring in 60 million yuan in revenue to farmers annually, Hechi Daily reported.

The investors plan to build a high pressure circulating fluidized bed boiler to provide heat supply to enterprises in the Huanjiang Industrial Park, replacing the traditional heating boilers.

The project, according to local officials, will greatly increase the supply of energy in the county, increase farmers' income and protect the environment.
