Xinhuanet Guangxi Channel recently joined hands with Wahaha’s Guangxi branch to donate nutritious beverages worth 38,000 yuan ($6,133.2) to students in nine financially difficult primary schools in Hechi, Southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Hechi, located in the rocky mountainous area, is the key region of western development in Guangxi. More than half of its 11 counties are state-supported poverty-stricken counties, where educational development lags behind.

The Zhanglao Village Central Primary School welcomed their guests on April 23. All 516 students received a small gift. Luo Yanhua, a fifth grade child, said, “I feel very happy to receive the gift. I will also buy gifts for the students in my school when I grow up.”

According to Wei Gang, headmaster of the school, 80 percent of the children in the school were leftover children or had experienced parental divorce. A part of the students were thin and undersized, and showed obvious malnutrition.

Some common problems were shown in the public activities, including poor living conditions, leftover children and book shortage.

Hechi is located in the northwestern part of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and the southern foothills of the Yungui Plateau.
