Fangchenggang is located at the southwest end of the Chinese Mainland’s coastline. It is a featured port city, border city and bay city. It is the most convenient gateway and channel from the Chinese Mainland to ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).
Fangchenggang port was established in 1968. The city was established in 1993, with a total area of 6,222 square kilometers.
Fangchenggang city administers Gangkou district, Fangcheng district, Shangsi county and Dongxing city, whose total population is one million and includes 21 nationalities, such as the Han nationality, Zhuang nationality and so on. The length of its coastline is 580 kilometers, while its land frontier is 101 kilometers.
Fangchenggang works as one of the core cities in the Northern Bay Economic Zone in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is also the national important steel energy base and border testing zone for the opening-up policy.
Fangchenggang city has an important strategic position in the development of the CAFTA (China-ASEAN Free Trade Area) and Northern Bay Area .

On March 9, 2012, at the NPC (National People’s Congress) and CPPCC (Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference), Wen Jiabao pointed out that the reason why the central government supported building the Northern Bay Economic Zone was to take advantage of Fangchenggang city and boost the development of the three coastal cities (Beihai, Fangchenggang city and Qinzhou city) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
He expressed his hope that Fangchenggang city would become an even better city in the future.
