Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region multi-ethnic opera ensemble has premiered in Europe with its classic Guangxi Opera Peach Blossom-like Face. The historic performances took place at Vienna's Musikverein from July 12 to 13.
This classic opera features emerging talents such as Gong Xiangyu and Yao Yutong. Performed in Guilin dialect, it narrates the ancient love story of scholar Cui Hu and maiden Du Yichun, whose poetic relationship endures through various trials.
To engage European audiences, the troupe incorporated multilingual subtitles, maintaining the opera's traditional spirit. Flash mobs allowed locals to experience opera makeup and costumes, while bilingual exhibitions attracted enthusiasts. After Vienna, the production will move to Cremona, Italy.
"This debut enhances the global presence of Chinese opera," said Yan Ming, the ensemble's deputy director, highlighting Guangxi opera's importance as a key intangible cultural heritage. It demonstrates artistic excellence and helps build cultural connections between China and Europe.
