The Mashan Zhuang ethnic drum boasts a history spanning over 1,000 years. The instrument originated in the late Song dynasty (960-1279) and flourished during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).

In 2021, it was selected for the fifth batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The drum was developed by the Zhuang people of modern-day Mashan county, Nanning city, South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. It is typically made using cowhide and is played to dispel evil spirits, attract good fortune, and provide entertainment.
