Guangxi's marine economy maintains high growth

According to the 2020 Marine Work Conference of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, the marine production value of Guangxi reached 164 billion yuan ($23.21 billion) in 2019, an increase of 9.2 percent year-on-year, maintaining high growth momentum.

Guangxi has issued the first policy on the development of the marine economy in the country, which has ensured the demand for a large number of major marine projects. A total of 353 million yuan in maritime use fees were collected in 2019.

Last year, the sea area of the projects was 10,700 hectares, with the total investment reaching 103.2 billion yuan, of which more than 650 hectares of sea area were used for 13 major projects in the country and the autonomous region, with a total investment of 50 billion yuan. After completion and being put into operation, those projects will increase economic growth by more than 300 billion yuan.

In 2019, Guangxi has focused on guiding and promoting the construction of the Beihai Marine Economy Development Demonstration Zone and the Marine Economy Innovative Development Demonstration City, as well as supported the development of marine biomedicine, marine engineering equipment, and other industrial chains, initially establishing a high-end and innovative modern marine industrial system.

The region has also supported related departments to seek cooperation and exchanges in coral reef protection and restoration, marine disaster prevention, blue carbon, polar surveys, as well as scientific research with institutions and universities of Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In addition, it has signed cooperation agreements with well-known domestic universities and declared 50 marine science and technology projects.

In 2020, Guangxi strives to achieve a regional GDP on marine economy of 176.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of about 7.5 percent, and the natural coastline retention rate will not be less than 35 percent.

It will build a number of marine economic industrial parks, set up a regional marine industry system, accelerate the establishment of a marine ecological early warning monitoring network, improve a set of monitoring indicators for marine economic operation, and actively participate in the preparations for the China-ASEAN Marine Economy Cooperation Forum.
